Assessment

The Bite & Babble way

Clear understanding is the foundation of meaningful support.

At Bite & Babble, our assessments are designed to provide clarity, direction, and confidence — not just information. We take a thoughtful, collaborative approach to understanding each child’s communication, feeding, and developmental profile, ensuring families leave with practical insight and a clear path forward.

Our assessments are evidence-based, neuroaffirming, and centred on the whole child, not just test results.

Our assessment services

We offer comprehensive assessments across a range of areas, including:

  • Speech and language assessment

  • Supporting understanding of speech clarity, expressive language, receptive language, and overall communication skills.

  • Feeding assessment

  • Gentle, evidence-based assessment of feeding skills, preferences, and challenges, with consideration of sensory, oral-motor, and environmental factors.

  • Communication and AAC assessment

  • Assessment to determine appropriate Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) supports, including low-tech and high-tech systems where appropriate.

  • Autism diagnostic assessment (ADOS-2)

  • We offer autism diagnostic assessment using the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition) as part of a broader clinical assessment process. The ADOS-2 is a standardised, play-based tool used to support clinical decision-making around autism.

    • ADOS-2 assessment is offered where appropriate and does not occur in isolation. It may be used alongside developmental history, caregiver input, questionnaires, and collaboration with other professionals.

  • Orofacial Myofunctional Assessment

Our assessment approach

Our assessment process is guided by three core principles:

  1. Neuroaffirming practiceWe respect neurodiversity and seek to understand each child’s individual profile rather than viewing differences as deficits.

  2. Collaboration: Families are active partners in the assessment process. Your knowledge of your child is valued and central to our understanding.

  3. Functional outcomes: Assessment findings are translated into practical, meaningful recommendations that support participation at home, school, and in the community.

What to expect

Families can expect a clear and supportive process, including:

  • A detailed intake and background discussion

  • Use of standardised and informal assessment tools tailored to your child

  • Observation of communication, play, and interaction

  • Verbal feedback provided in clear, parent-friendly language

  • A written report or summary outlining findings and recommendations (as required)

What happens after assessment

Following assessment, families may choose to:

  • Commence intervention at Bite & Babble

  • Seek support through group programs

  • Share assessment findings with educators or other professionals

  • Take time to consider next steps without obligation

We support families to make informed decisions that feel right for them.

ados-2 (autism diagnostic observation scale)

Support, clarity, and a pathway forward for your child.

What is the ADOS-2?

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a gold-standard, play-based assessment used worldwide as part of the process for identifying Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It allows clinicians to observe your child’s communication, social skills, interaction style, and behavioural patterns in a structured and supportive environment.Importantly, the ADOS-2 is one component of the diagnostic process. Combined with parent interviews, developmental history, and clinical judgement, it helps us build a clear picture of your child’s needs.

What’s Included in the ADOS Assessment Package?

1. Pre-Assessment Parent Interview

We learn about your child’s history, strengths, challenges, and daily routines. This helps ensure the ADOS session is tailored and meaningful.

2. Face-to-Face ADOS-2 Assessment

Your child attends a structured, play-based session delivered by our Speech Pathologist and Occupational Therapist. We observe how they communicate, problem-solve, engage, and respond to social interactions.

3. Post-Assessment Phone Call

We discuss initial impressions, answer questions, and outline next steps.

4. Comprehensive Written Report

You receive a detailed report that may include:

  • ADOS-2 results

  • Observed strengths and challenges

  • Clinical interpretation

  • Recommendations for therapy, school supports, and further assessments if needed

At Bite & Babble, we understand that seeking answers about your child’s development can feel overwhelming. Many parents come to us feeling unsure, unheard, or worried that others aren’t seeing what they see at home. Our ADOS-2 assessments offer a structured, supportive way to explore your child’s communication, social interaction, play, and sensory needs with a focus on clarity, compassion, and next steps.

We've partnered with Little Heroes Occupational Therapy to offer a multidisciplinary ADOS-2 assessment, completed by a Speech Pathologist and Occupational Therapist, to provide a comprehensive understanding of your child’s strengths and areas of difficulty.
